GRRM just reminded me that he has signed books - by many authors but me
included - at his Jean Cocteau Cinema. They have copies of my Spartacus
novel The Risen as well as three of the Wild Cards books I've
contributed to. All of those have also been signed by George and any
other authors who've visited the Cinema (and signed books they wrote or
contributed to, I mean). There's a lot to choose from across many
genres. Go check it out. Signed books make great presents!
I make a brief appearance on a video posted at GRRM's "Not a Blog." It's from short interviews we did when we gathered in fall of 2017 for a reunion/get together. I'm on at 1:06.
Two new Wild Cards covers. One Eyed Jacks is a reprint from an earlier volume.
Low Chicago is brand new. Wild Cards continues to gain steam! Love that and really pleased to be involved with the series. Fingers crossed that the TV version happens!
I'm back home after an awesome Wild Cards reunion in Santa Fe. Highlights include hanging with a bunch of authors, staying at GRRM's guest house, a big panel event, followed by a big signing event, visiting sets used in Western movies, stopping in to watch filming of a movie, meeting Vincent D'Onofrio and Ethan Hawke, meeting the lovely Marisa Xochtl Jimenez of the Stagecoach Foundation, watching Sage (my 16 year old son) network with authors, actors, directors and producers. He's got skills. Also, the last night's bash at Meow Wolf, where this photo was taken!
"Jean Cocteau Cinema Celebrates the WILD CARD ANNIVERSARY by hosting a special multi-author book signing with the authors of Wild Cards, an epic science fiction anthology about super heroes and powerful villains (edited by George R.R. Martin)."
The Wild Cards Series has a shiny new website. It's lovely, and going to be growing and active and (hopefully) full of awesome news about great things to come. (Things are in the works.) If you click over to it you'll see - among others - one of my characters featured on the covers displayed on the main page! The snaky dude. (At this point I'm obligated to mention that my son was my co-creator of this character, as he always reminds me.) Anyway, check it out!
If you watch you'll catch a glimpse of my character in action on one of the covers. Hint: he's the one wearing a hoodie. Further fact: he's a good guy.
Very
pleased to have sent my portion of the next Wild Cards novel, HIGH STAKES, in to George RR Martin
last night. It's been a long process this time around, with some
serious delays. But yesterday I got what I needed to finish, I went to
work and 4,167 words later I pressed SEND. (My sections are 43,000 in
total.) So. Done.
Until I have to do rewrites.
Now back to packing and teaching and all the other things of life!
I'm very pleased to announce that as of today the newest Wild Card's mosaic novel is available!
It's edited by George RR Martin, is out in the world. It features original fiction by Carrie Vaughn, Ian Tregillis, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Mary Anne Mohanraj, David D. Levine, Michael Cassutt, and Walter John Williams.
Oh... and me!
Here, by the way, is the final cover:
The dude on the front is Marcus Morgan, also know as the Infamous Black Tongue. IBT for short. He's the product of a collaboration between myself and my son. He wouldn't exist quite
the way he does with Sage's input.
Awesome, that.
Wanna sample of this thing? Okay, here's one at Tor.com. It begins with a Michael Cassutt's story, and then includes the first part of mine.
Actually, I've gotten some love a number of times with in excerpts. IBT is featured on the Amazon page for the book, as well as in the official excerpt on GRRM's site.
Here's some copy from the jacket:
Decades after an alien virus changed the course of history, the surviving population of Manhattan still struggles to understand the new world left in its wake. Natural humans share the rough city with those given extraordinary—and sometimes terrifying—traits. While most manage to coexist in an uneasy peace, not everyone is willing to adapt. Down in the seedy underbelly of Jokertown, residents are going missing. The authorities are unwilling to investigate, except for a fresh lieutenant looking to prove himself and a collection of unlikely jokers forced to take matters into their own hands—or tentacles. The deeper into the kidnapping case these misfits and miscreants get, the higher the stakes are raised.
Never tried Wild Cards? It's a long-running series, but not to worry. You could begin at the book just before this one, Fort Freak (Wild Cards). It's the start of a new cycle, and it also features my character!
One is that after a long time sitting on it, I think I can finally display the cover art for the forthcoming Wild Card novel, Lowball. What gives me particular pleasure is that my character, Marcus Morgan (aka The Infamous Black Tongue), is featured on the cover! The kid owns it.
Check it out:
It sill needs all the covery-bits added, but that's the image. Love it. You know what's even better? My son Sage was instrumental in creating this character. To hear him tell it, he did create the character. Don't believe it for a minute. ;)
The reason I think it's okay to show this now is that George RR Martin has it up on his website. He's using it to illustrate the page with an excerpt from Lowball. And you know what's even better than that? The excerpt is from my multi-part story, "Those About to Die..." Awesome. In all likelihood it'll be on GRRM's site for ages, since the next book - the last in this trilogy - won't be out for a while yet. I'm going to be in that one too. Actually, I'm working like crazy to deliver my contribution by the end of this month. Wish me luck on that, please.
...a piece of Wild Cards news that does include me!
I'm very pleased to be able to say that the next installment in the long-running collaborative sf series has just been delivered to, and accepted by, Tor. It's called Lowball, and it's likely to hit store shelves in 2014.
My contribution is again a story about Marcus Carter (aka Infamous Black Tongue). I debuted the character in the last volume, Fort Freak. He's back again, and in for a world of hurt. Poor lad. It's a multi-part story that weaves in from start to finish of the book.
The full lineup this time is:
“The Big Bleed,” by Michael Cassutt, starring STUNTMAN,
“Those About to Die,” by David Anthony Durham, starring INFAMOUS BLACK TONGUE,
“Galahad in Blue” by Melinda Snodgrass, starring FRANCIS XAVIER BLACK of the NYPD,
“Ties That Bind” by Mary Anne Mohanraj, starring MICHAEL STEVENS of the NYPD,
“Cry Wolf” by David D. Levine, introducing THE CARTOONIST,
“Road Kill” by Walter Jon Williams, starring GORDON THE GHOUL,
