"This Will Go Down On Your Permanent Record..."
Late last night, walking alone (for the first time in many hours) through the streets of Montreal, weighed down with tiara and various boxes of things, I kept hearing a voice saying that. "This will go down on your permanent record." Thing is, the "this" is a very good thing, and I'm thrilled about that permanent record.
The good news: yes, I did win the John W Campbell Award for Best New Writer (of sf/f) last night. I'll probably need a few days to process that, and today remains a busy one... but I couldn't help wanting to mention it. I'm a very, very happy writer today.
Here's the Anticipation Press Release, with all the Hugo winners.
More soon.

Congratulations, sir. You've earned it!
I was at the ceremony and the Hugo Nominees party afterwards, and I can confirm that David is not making this up--he won, and was wearing the tiara all night to prove it. :) As I said last night, David, congratulations--truly a well deserved award. And now I'm falling into bed after the seven hour drive back...
This is great news--congratulations. And thanks, Greg, for confirming it. I was suspicious until I read that comment.
Congratulations, David! You deserved it. A great day, indeed!
Congratulations! Though, I admit, I think the tiara probably looks a little better on Ms. Robinette Kowal. Something about the hair, maybe...
My best,
Bryan Russell
Congratulations ! I am so happy for you. You deserve it.
PS : Nice Tiara ^^
Congratulations!!! Let it sink in, let it sink in!!
Yay for you and for us readers, too, since I'm sure this will make it easier for you to earn your keep turning out fantastic work. I also like having my taste confirmed yet again ....
Just read the news on io9 and, as my people say, MAZEL TOV! Truly enjoyed your SF work and looking forward to more!
Congratulations! You are one of my favorite writers and you truly deserve this!
Congrats! Much deserved. My permanent record is much much worse... :)
Congratulations! It was such a pleasure doing that panel with you, and getting to meet you & your family. I look forward to the next time we're both/all in the same place.
Just wanted to clear up those nasty conspiracy theories, Jamey... ;)
Forgot to mention that David's acceptance speech was good too--included a funny moment where he stopped, smiled and said "I'm talking to all of you," and everyone cracked up.
Congratulations David, Well deserved and furthermore well earned by a truly great writer and a thoroughly nice chap.
Love light n peace
Brett
Congrats, David! Well deserved!
Thanks Everyone!
I'm home now and yes, Jenn, letting it sink in. I'll post soon about the things this already has me thinking. Winning awards is a weird thing. Must have context to make sense of it.
Ellen, that panel was one of the other highlights of the con for me, as was meeting you in general. Very much looking forward to seeing you next time!
Congratulations! We want a photo with you wearing that tiara, of course. My son and I had to leave before noon Sunday, but we were glad we attended the panel with you, Dawn Hewitt and L.E. Modesitt. You are a terrific writer, and a charming, generous guy. Best to you and yours. Looking forward to more of the Known World, for know I am going to get Pride of Carthage.
Congratulations! You deserved it. Acacia is such an awesome read.
Congrats, David! I second the request for pics of you rocking the tiara ;)
Congratulations!! So very happy for you! As a former student and now reader of your works it is exciting to see. You deserve it! Also, I third the request for picture with tiara for those of us who weren't there to witness. :-)
Okay, okay... I'll find a tiara photo. ;)
Give me a bit, though, as my internet isn't letting me do anything with images right now.
(No, really, I mean it.)
Very tickled you won the Campbell. Congratulations, David!
This is fabulous news, David. Congrats!
Thank you. Thank you.
It's funny, Constance, how things play out. Of course, last year I would have wanted to win in Denver. But now I can't imagine anything better than this timing, than getting the tiara from Mary, and then doing it with family with me - and with a new book out next month!
It's so true that sometimes the things that don't happen now set the stage for other, even better things later...
